Dave Grohl Talks Reuniting With Nirvana Pals
With the Foo Fighters firmly on his front burner for 2011, Dave Grohl has been discussing the group’s new album, which will see release next year. He recently spoke to Q magazine about reuniting with Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic and producer Butch Vig, who also produced Nirvana’s Nevermind.
“Going back to make an album with a producer you’ve worked with before is not unlike going back and [expletive] a girlfriend you had 20 years ago,” Grohl said, in regards to Vig. “It can either be really good or a total [expletive] disaster. But it was perfectly natural and totally comfortable and he’s the same person he was 20 years ago. He wears cologne now. I think that’s the only difference.”
Grohl was just as comfortable bringing in Nirvana bassist Novoselic to contribute to the new Foo Fighters release.
“We’ve always been in touch. One of the things about the expanded Nirvana family, it doesn’t matter how much time has passed, when you see each other you’re immediately connected by that, by the good and bad things,” he said. “When I see Krist, I hug him to celebrate our lives, but I also hug him to console him. There’s a song called ‘I Should Have Known’ that I thought would sound great with his bass-playing and accordion-playing. It’s probably the darkest song on the album.”
But Nirvana-related artists aren’t the only collaborators on the album. Grohl also worked with veteran rocker Bob Mould on a new song, “Dear Rosemary.”
“It sounds like Bob and I wrote a song for Husker Du 20 years ago and the Foo Fighters are covering it,” he said.
