U2 Smash Rolling Stones' Tour Record
Live Nation have announced U2's "360" tour to be the most successful of all time.
Their sold-out show on Sunday at the Morumbi Stadium in San Paulo was the moment they broke the record previously held by The Rolling Stones for their "Bigger Bang" tour, which grossed $554 million only a few years ago.
The tour began in July 2009, and U2 still have 20 gigs before it ends, including their first headline slot at the renown Glastonbury Festival. On average they pull 63,000 people at every show, each time raising over $6 million.
"These numbers are staggering, a fantastic result", said tour promoter and producer Arthur Fogel. "U2 have invented a new style of rock show and they continue to deliver their fans the best possible live experience."
Manager Paul McGuinness said the band needed the big revenue to help pay for their extravagant stage show: "The band spend enormous sums on production for their audience. Fans all over the world agree that a ticket to U2 '360' is good value for money."
The last date on their tour will be at the Magnetic Music Hill Musical Festival in Moncton, Canada, with Arcade Fire as their support.
Thanks for the report to BBC and Billboard.
