Green Day's American Idiot Movie
The Broadway production of "American Idiot", a musical named after the Green Day album, has been given the green light to become a feature film.
Universal Studios are negotiating for the screen rights, and they even have Tom Hanks lined up to produce it. Oscar winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who also wrote "Milk", will write the screenplay.
The story follows three characters - the aimless Jesus of Suburbia, punk rock freedom fighter St. Jimmy, and Whatshername (really, that's her name), tacking the ideas of love vs rage.
Green Day frontman Billy Joe Armstrong took the role of St. Jimmy in the stage show for a period, but on his departure the box office sales dropped from $1.3m to less than $400,000 the week he left. He returned to reprise his role on April 5th for the final three weeks, one year after the show opened.
The final night is set for April 24th, and has won a huge set of awards including a Grammy, two Tony awards, a Drama Desk awards, an Outer Critics Circle award and an Actor's Equity Association Award.
Thanks for the report to Gibson and Billboard.
